SIX OF IBIZA’S DREAMIEST CHIRINGUITOS
THE FISH SHACK: THE PARED-BACK ICON
This cult coastal hangout is as undone as can be. It doesn’t even last the winter, being packed away before the first of the November storms, leaving nothing but prawn shells and footprints in its wake. The menu is simply whatever is freshest that day – sea bass, calamari, octopus, red prawns – served with cool boiled potatoes and simple salad.
ES TORRENT: THE ELEVATED CLASSIC
The grande dame of island chiringuitos. Polished wood, white linens, chinking crystal and sophisticated service elevate this San José classic to the realms of icon, but at its heart remains the humble fish shack that’s been serving Ibiza’s best paella and guisat de peix – the island’s rich, rock fish stew – since 1983.
EL BIGOTES: THE RUSTIC LEGEND
Tucked away in a far-flung northeastern cove, El Bigotes (The Moustache) is an Ibiza institution. Only two dishes are served – grilled fish at midday and bullit de peix – a traditional rockfish and rice stew – at 2pm. The open fire kitchen is an extraordinary sight and the tiny restaurant has its own jetty where the fresh catch is brought in daily.
CHIRINGUITO XUCLAR: THE STYLE-SET FAVOURITE
With its creamy, canvas director’s chairs and simple, chalkboard menu, laidback little Xuclar is as pretty as it comes. The seafood dishes are simple yet stylish and the tiny, pebbly beach is the perfect place to spend the day relaxing away from the crowds. By night, the lantern-strung cove makes for one of Ibiza’s most romantic supper spots.
SES BOQUES: THE SOUTHERN SECRET
Following a slightly alarming cliffside drive from the impossible pretty church of Es Cubells, the soothing, pine-fringed bay of Ses Boques is a balm for the soul. An Ibiza classic for fifty years, this sandy-toes, family-run favourite is where the island’s smart set go to stay under the radar.
BEACHOUSE: THE DAY-TO-NIGHT HANGOUT
Laid-back and lovely Beachouse is a contemporary icon of the free-spirited, all-day essence of Ibiza. From daybreak yoga on the sands, to the longest of late lunches, to sultry summer nights dancing beneath the stars, this palapa-shaded coastal hangout oozes bohemian cool.
