THE SHOE THAT BECAME AN ICON OF IBIZA’S CULTURAL HERITAGE.
The native espardenyes of Ibiza are named for the esparto grass from which they are woven, harvested for thousands of years on Illa s’Espartar, off the island’s west coast. Esparto grass is cut, dried, soaked, stripped and plaited into ropes of multiple strands which are then sewn together to create the emblematic shoe. Historically, men’s espardenyes had open toes while the women’s were kept closed.
