SANTA GERTRUDIS: DESIGN SPOTLIGHT
Quaint villages are the heart and soul of Ibiza, but Santa Gertrudis is arguably the most characterful of them all. Its church, completed in 1797, is immediately recognizable for its bright, whitewashed façade and canary yellow belfry – the largest on the island. Today, this oft-photographed icon belies the creativity of the village, now a veritable hotbed of design.
GALERÍA TAMBIÉN
Founded by ex-EMI music industry creative Jorge Fernandez and his French artist wife, Natalie Rich, Galeria Tambien is the kind of studio / showroom / gallery space that literally oozes contemporary cool. The founders focus on iconic mid-century design pieces along with a revolving art gallery that features exhibitions from an eclectic school of artists who’ve captured the duo’s eye. That might be Caroline Rennequin, the former artistic director of Isabel Marant, whose large-scale, colour-soaked paintings are verdant with Indian flowers and cacti. Or perhaps Charles Burnex, the young French street artist who cites street artists Cleon Peterson, Zoo Project, Philippe Baudelocque and Kraken as influences and works across mediums including painting, ceramics, drawing, sculpture and fabric.
ESTUDIO LATERNA
A creative hub and multidisciplinary art and nature space, this once-abandoned lot was transformed by creative duo Andrea Sánchez and Ricardo Jarpa, whose layered vision of flowers, shrubs, trees, and tall grasses serves as a space for living installations, as an experimental garden, and as a nucleus of art for the community. Alongside the garden sits an extraordinary, contemporary exhibition and events space, the yin to the garden’s yang – a space to delve deeply in art, culture and literature and absorb Ibiza’s extraordinary creative energy.
